Factorio: inspect both ends of an underground pipe crossing
An underground pipe connection is easy to overlook because most of its route is hidden. Use the endpoint indicators to verify orientation and connection before diagnosing a missing fluid farther downstream. The exercise keeps the crossing short enough to inspect on one screen.

Give the crossing one clear purpose
Choose a simple pipe route that must cross a walkway or another compact build. Keep only one intended fluid in the practice system. Mark the source side and destination side in a note before placing the endpoints. This prevents a convenient-looking pair from hiding a mistaken assumption about where fluid should enter and leave. The underground segment is a connection tool, not a separate source of fluid or a pump by itself.
Orient the endpoints toward the intended pair
Inspect the placement preview and connection indicator while positioning the two pipe-to-ground entities. Their underground-facing directions need to form a valid link within the supported range. Use the game’s visible connection feedback rather than memorizing a tile count from another version. Check both ends; a correctly facing source endpoint does not prove that the destination endpoint faces it or belongs to the intended pair when other pipes are nearby.
Read the fluid state on each visible side
Inspect the source-side pipe and destination-side pipe. If fluid exists only before the crossing, the endpoint pair is a useful place to investigate. If neither side contains the intended fluid, trace farther upstream. If both sides contain it but the consumer is idle, the problem may be beyond the crossing. This three-way comparison narrows the search instead of treating every empty machine as evidence that underground pipes are inherently unreliable.
Change the connection without changing the whole route
In a separate practice area, correct the endpoint orientation or spacing and inspect the result. Avoid rebuilding a large fluid network while you are still learning which endpoints were paired. Record the source, the intended destination and the connection indicator you observed. The resulting note should explain the hidden link in a way you can reconstruct later, even when the rest of the factory has grown around the crossing.
Illustrative worked example
Illustrative diagnosis: A short water route reaches the first pipe-to-ground, but the pipe after the second endpoint is empty. The player checks the highlighted connection and finds that the second endpoint was rotated away from the first. They plan a correction and then inspect the fluid state on both sides. This is a hypothetical cause to verify, not a claim that orientation explains every low-flow or empty-pipe situation.
Questions that come up
Does underground pipe create pressure or fluid?
No. It provides a hidden connection between endpoints. Supply and the rest of the fluid system still determine whether the intended consumer receives fluid.
Should I rely on a remembered maximum distance?
Use your installed game’s placement feedback, especially across versions or mods. A valid visible link is more useful than a tile count remembered without its endpoint convention.
