Factorio: use the two belt lanes as separate streams

A Factorio belt has two lanes, and the lane on which an item arrives can matter at the next connection. This small routing exercise uses two harmless item streams to make lane behavior visible before the belt disappears into a busy factory.

Two streams → Side junction → Destination lane → Consumer trace

Choose two visually distinct items

Use a small amount of iron plate and copper plate in a separate practice area. Feed them onto different sides of a belt using a simple arrangement you can inspect. The goal is to see two streams traveling on one belt, not to optimize throughput. Avoid beginning with a mixed production line full of several items, because it becomes harder to tell whether a later result came from lane placement or from a supply interruption.

Observe side loading at a junction

Bring one belt into the side of another and watch where the items join. Side loading places the incoming stream onto a lane determined by the connection geometry. Rotate or rebuild only the short practice junction, then compare the visible destination lane. Do not infer a general rule from a screenshot viewed in the opposite direction. Follow the arrows and trace an actual item through the junction in your own game.

Separate lane arrangement from item selection

A belt lane is a position, not an automatic filter by material. If both item types enter the same lane upstream, a downstream machine does not magically restore the original separation. Keep the source arrangement clear and inspect each junction. A routing note should say which side carries which item and from whose travel direction that side is described. Left on a screen can become ambiguous when the belt turns.

Apply the observation to one consumer

Choose a familiar consumer that needs the intended items and inspect whether its inserter can obtain them. If one ingredient is missing, trace that stream backward before expanding production. The practice should end with a simple lane map and a statement about the junction, not a claim that every two-lane layout will feed every recipe. Rates, inserter behavior and the machine’s current inventory remain additional parts of a working system.

Illustrative worked example

Illustrative layout: Iron plates travel along one side of a short belt while copper plates are side-loaded at a visible junction. The player sketches the junction and labels the lane reached by copper after the connection. They then rotate the exercise and inspect the changed geometry. No throughput result is assumed; the task is to observe item position and explain it before using the arrangement in a production area.

Questions that come up

Does turning a belt erase the lane distinction?

No. Lanes continue through belt geometry, but describing them as screen-left and screen-right can become confusing. Trace the stream through the actual turn.

Should I build a large balancer first?

Not for this lesson. A short visible junction teaches the lane behavior more clearly. Larger arrangements can be studied after the basic stream position is understood.
