Factorio: keep a boiler fuel arm independent of grid power

An electric inserter feeding the machines that generate its own electricity can become part of a restart problem. A burner inserter offers a different dependency. This guide uses a small boiler fuel handoff to show why the arm’s energy source matters as much as its direction.

Fuel source → Burner arm → Boiler fuel → Independent dependency

Draw the power dependency

Start with a boiler, a nearby fuel source and an inserter position that can move fuel into the boiler. An electric arm depends on the network it helps supply. A burner arm consumes fuel instead, so it does not need that electrical connection to move. The distinction is useful before scaling, because a factory can appear well supplied while a temporary loss of fuel reveals a circular restart dependency.

Place the pickup and drop deliberately

Use the placement direction indicator to identify the fuel source and destination. For the first learning build, keep the source simple, such as a chest containing coal. Inspect the arm’s own fuel state and the boiler’s fuel inventory separately. The arm can refuel itself when it picks up suitable fuel, but a machine that already exhausted its ability to move may still need attention. Do not confuse a full source chest with proof that every part of the handoff is ready.

Observe one transfer at a time

Let the small setup run and inspect where the coal goes. The useful observation is not merely that the arm swings; it is that the boiler receives fuel while the arm maintains its own ability to operate. If it stops, examine source availability, orientation, destination demand and the arm’s fuel state. These are different causes, so changing the arm type repeatedly may hide the original problem instead of explaining it.

Scale the idea without assuming unlimited restart capacity

One independently fueled arm can help a small power arrangement, but it does not guarantee that an entire large factory will recover from a fuel shortage. The boiler row still needs sufficient fuel delivery, water, steam connections and electrical capacity. Keep a learning note that names the dependency removed: this fuel arm does not require grid electricity. That precise statement is more useful than declaring the whole power system immune to failure.

Illustrative worked example

Illustrative build: A practice factory uses one boiler and a coal chest beside a burner inserter. The player traces chest to arm to boiler and separately checks the arm’s own fuel. They then sketch how an electric inserter at the same location would depend on the network. The lesson does not claim that the setup was tested; it provides a small diagnostic plan for observing the two energy dependencies in the player’s own save.

Questions that come up

Does a burner inserter create electricity?

No. It moves items using fuel. The boiler and steam engine chain is responsible for supplying electricity in this example.

Why not replace every inserter with a burner arm?

Different inserters serve different tasks. This exercise isolates a restart dependency; it is not a claim that burner inserters are best for every production line.
