Factorio: read a lab’s missing science pack as a recipe problem
A powered lab needs the science packs required by the selected research. A large stock of one color cannot replace another missing color. Use one lab and one selected technology to trace what the research actually consumes before duplicating more laboratories.
Original explanatory diagram. Read the full method and limitations below.
Select one technology and read its requirements
Open the technology information and identify the science pack types and quantities for that research. Keep the selected technology fixed during the first diagnosis. A lab that worked for an earlier technology may need an additional pack type for the next one. Write the required types as separate notebook entries rather than describing the lab as simply needing science. The categories are not interchangeable fuel colors.
Inspect the lab’s actual inventory
Open one affected lab and compare its contents with the selected research requirements. A full slot of one pack alongside an empty required slot points toward a supply mismatch, not necessarily insufficient lab count. Check electrical status as another distinct condition. The first useful question is which required input is absent. Adding more labs can multiply the same missing-input problem if the supply system still delivers only the available pack types.
Trace the absent pack backward
Follow its inserter, belt or other delivery path to the production source. At each step, inspect whether the item exists and can reach the next handoff. Keep the trace specific to the missing pack instead of redesigning every science line at once. If the source assembler lacks an ingredient, the problem has moved upstream into that pack’s production. The lab is reporting the symptom rather than creating the shortage by itself.
Scale research after the input set works
Once the required pack types can reach the lab, observe research progress and the supply rate. More labs can increase consumption capacity, but they do not create additional science packs. Expand according to the bottleneck you actually identify. A useful note distinguishes required types, delivered types and available production rate. This prevents an attractive row of idle labs from being mistaken for progress toward a research goal.
Illustrative worked example
Illustrative scenario: A fictional research requires two pack types. The lab has a generous stock of the first and none of the second. The player lists both requirements, opens the lab and traces the absent type to an assembler whose ingredient belt is empty. Their next action concerns that ingredient stream. The example does not invent a named technology’s requirements; players should read the exact technology selected in their installed game.
Questions that come up
Can extra red packs replace missing green packs?
No. Required pack types are distinct ingredients for the selected research. Supply the actual missing type rather than increasing an unrelated stock.
Does an idle lab always lack science?
No. Power, research selection and other conditions can matter. Inspect the lab and selected technology instead of treating one symptom as a complete diagnosis.
